Active Data: Basics

Active Data is a new research area that is being implemented at PNNL. This tool functions by actively recommending the most relevant documents from other datasets in the same IN-SPIRE project based on the actions taken in the currently open dataset.

Opening Active Data

Active Data is turned off by default.

To turn on Active Data, go to Settings menu > Active Data On. A checkmark will display when Active Data is on.

Active Data will be available to open from:

Tools menu > Active data

button from Active Data in the right side panel

When Active Data is off, it will not be available from the options listed above.

Using Active Data

The Active Data Tool will watch you use IN-SPIRE and will build up a list of documents most related to the actions you have been taking. Actions that trigger Active Data include making a selection, performing a simple search or search by example, making a group, or focusing on a set of documents.

Actions are only tracked while the Active Data tool is on. Actions performed while the tool is off will not contribute to the recommendations.

Active Data has three tabs: Explore, Activity, and Favorites. Each tab is discussed below in detail.

Explore Tab

The Explore tab allows you to sort through recommended documents, preview their key terms, and mark some as favorites. The Explore tab includes a details panel (document list) and overview panel (facets and timeline). The details panel shows a ranked list of recommended documents from other datasets in the current IN-SPIRE project based on the cumulative effect of all tracked actions. The overview panel displays facets and time for recommended documents. These allow you to filter the full list of recommendations using keywords, specific datasets, and/or a time range.

Quick Notes

Activity Tab

The Activity tab displays your history of actions taken in IN-SPIRE within the current dataset with Active Data on. The Activity tab displays the same set of recommended documents as the Explore tab but organizes them by associated action. Actions that will display include making a selection, performing a simple search or search by example, making a group, or focusing on a set of documents.

Quick Notes

Favorites Tab

The Favorites tab displays the list of any recommended documents you have marked as a favorite. From here, your favorites can be made into a new dataset.

Toolbar

Create New Dataset creates a new dataset based on recommended documents. Create New Dataset can be used from all three tabs. From Explore and Activity tabs, Create New Dataset will create a new dataset from the listed recommended documents. From Favorites tab, Create New Dataset will create a new dataset from the documents that are marked as favorites.

If there is more than one source type listed, the new dataset will not be created.

Create New Dataset button only works for datasets that have more than one source file.

Add to Favorites adds the selected document to the Favorites tab. You can add documents to favorites from the either the Explore or Activity tabs. You can also add highlighted documents to favorites by clicking on the star.

Preview opens a document preview window and allows you to read the text of the highlighted document. Terms that were used to generate the recommendation are automatically highlighted. To return to the previous list of documents, select the button.

Settings menu includes options such as:

Clear Activity option only functions with the Explore and Activity tabs. This option clears your entire Active Data history.

Clear Favorites option only functions with the Favorites tab. This option clears your list of documents you marked as favorites.

Original Format, Larger Type, Smaller Type, Highlight Details, and Markings options only function with the document preview window.

Recommender Threshold option functions with all three tabs. This threshold allows you to control the amount of recommended documents you want to view.

The Keep Top Documents options keep the specified number of documents per dataset within a project.

The Contains At Least Keywords options keep the documents containing the specified number of keywords.

Contains At Least 4 Keywords option is chosen by default.

Changes to the Recommender Threshold only apply to future actions.

Detach from Main Window detaches the tool from the main IN-SPIRE window.

Active Data (right-sidebar)

Active Data is also available in the main IN-SPIRE window at the bottom of the right sidebar. It lists the datasets in the current project, the matching documents count, and the strength of those matches. The list is sorted by strength, not by document count. Clicking on the button will open Active Data.
