Document Viewer: Groups and Evidence

While the Groups tool allows you to highlight or select all of the documents in a group, the Document Viewer lets you see the documents that belong to these groups, and to adjust their membership in them.

Viewing the Group Membership of Documents

Perform the same steps that you would if you were intending to rate documents with respect to groups.

  1. In the Groups tool, highlight the groups you are interested in.
  2. In the Document Viewer, choose Settings > Groups and Evidence Ratings. Columns for the groups you have highlighted will be added to the document table. If a document is a member of a group but has not yet been rated, the cell that is the intersection of the document (row) and the group (column) will contain . For how to rate documents and what the ratings mean, see Document Rater.

Changing the Group to Which a Document Belongs

To remove a document from a group

  1. Click on the cell that is the intersection of the document row and group column. The Document Rater will appear.
Document Rater - Not a Group Member

  2. In the Document Rater click on the Not a Member button.

Adding a Document to a Highlighted Group

  1. If the group to which you want to add the document is visible in the Document Viewer:
Click on the cell that is the intersection of the document row and the group column. The Document Rater will open.

  2. In the Document Rater either click Unrated (it is a member but it has not been rated yet), Ambiguous (the document contains both supportive and refutive evidence), or select a rating.

Adding a Document to an Unhighlighted Group

Unhighlighted groups will not have columns in the Document Viewer. Sometimes you will be working with your highlighted groups when you will find a document that belongs in a group that is not highlighted. It is not necessary to go to the Groups tool to highlight that group in order to add the document to it. Insteadd, choose Edit > Add document to Group.. The Add Document to Group window opens, with a list of all of the unhighlighted groups. From the list, choose the group to which the document should be added, and click OK.

Removing a Document from a Group

There are two ways to remove a document from a group:

  1. With groups and ratings showing (Choose Settings > Show Groups and Ratings if they are not visible), locate the document and the group from which you want to remove it. The group will need to be highlighted in the Groups tool for it to show up in the Document Viewer. Click in the cell that is the intersection of the document (row) and group (column). Click in that cell and the Document Rater will open. On the Document Rater window, click the Not a Member button.
  2. If you want to remove a document from more than one group, it may be easier to use this method: Choose Edit > Remove document from Group... The Remove Document from Group window opens. Choose which group(s) to remove the document from. Click OK.
