Triage enables you to use multiple characteristics of the document dataset to isolate documents of interest. The basic technique is to design a network of operations on the dataset where each operation produces a set of results and each set of results can be used to feed into further operations in the network. The Triage tool supports the development of the steps in the network creation process and provides a visual representation of the network you build, with interactive access to the results.
Click the Show Triage button on the IN-SPIRE main window toolbar, or | |
From the Tools menu, select Triage. |
Note: If the Triage button does not display on the toolbar, you will need to turn on Triage in your IN-SPIRE Preferences file.
A Triage network is a sequence of functions performed on the dataset that will sift through your dataset and group together documents in a way you find useful. The Triage tool supplies an area where you can create 'networks' of functions. Each function yields a group of documents which you can then feed into yet more functions.
Use the following procedure to create a simple triage network.
From the Dataset Editor, open a dataset.
From the IN-SPIRE main toolbar, click the Show
Triage button.
The Triage window will display. If
you have not yet created any triage networks, the following message will
display in the network panel.
If a Triage network has already been created for your current dataset,
the network will display in the panel as shown in the following example.
To create a new Triage network based on a new
query, click the Query button. The
Query panel will display below the network panel.
The query will be set to a default color which you can change by clicking
the Color button.
In the Name field, type in the name of the new
group that will be formed when the query is run.
Note: While
the groups made in Triage will display in the Groups window, along with
other groups you have defined, you will not be able to delete or alter
them with the Groups tools. To
change these groups, use Triage and edit the network.
Select a color for your group by clicking the Color button. The Select Group Color window will display. Select a color from the color swatch display and click Done. The new color will display in the Edit panel.
Create a query in the query pane by selecting
a Query Type from the drop-down menu. Enter
the text of your query in the Query Text field. Fill
in the query definition by typing your query in the Query Text box. You
can create Words in Document and Query By Example (QBE) queries using
the same techniques described in the Queries
tool.
In our example, we will perform a Words in Document Query.
From the Query Fields list, select the dataset
field you want the query to search.
The default
selection is All Fields, which will allow the query to run on the entire
document.
In the Query field, type the words you want to search for in the dataset.
Click OK. The
query will be run on your current dataset and the newly created network
node will display in the Triage Network panel.
You can edit the node later by right-clicking on it and selecting Edit
from the drop-down menu.
Those documents belonging to the new group will display in the group
color in the Galaxy.
Continue adding queries to the network.
After you have added several queries you can rearrange them by dragging and dropping them into position in the network panel.
Hover the cursor over the network nodes to view
the resulting document count totals.
Click the Document Viewer to display the documents in the selected node. The Triage network will automatically be saved as you create it.
Once you have created a Triage network, you can change its name, copy, delete, undelete, and share it among other IN-SPIRE users. To manage Triage networks, perform the following procedure.
From the Triage window Networks drop-down menu,
select Manage Networks.
The Manage Available Networks window will display.
If you have created networks before for other datasets, these will
display in the Local Networks list. If
you have not yet created any networks, the Local Networks list will be
empty.
You can create a new network by copying a network.
To copy
a network, select the network name from the Local Networks list and click
Copy. The
network will be copied with [copy] in the network name.
Select the copied network from the Local Networks list.
Rename the copied network by clicking Rename.
Type a new name for the copied network.
To delete a network, select it from the Local Networks list and click Delete.
Once you have defined at least two queries, you can add other Triage network functions. The Combination buttons enable you to combine the results of two or more queries. These buttons display at the bottom of the Triage window.
One of the tools provided by Triage is the ability to select out documents that you either want to include or want to exclude from the network results. The Slice, Combo, and Subtract functions enable you to define how to select documents. Assuming you have three groups, you can then select which parts of these groups to keep and pass on to the next network function. You can string together multiple functions to yield very precise results. In the diagram below, three groups of documents have been defined as network nodes. These groups overlap in the dataset as shown.
When you begin to set up a Combination (Combo) function, you can select All the documents in the source nodes, which will yield every document in the three nodes, regardless of overlap.
With the Subtract function, selecting Nodes to Subtract will remove the Overlapping documents and will yield only those documents that overlap once, as labelled in the diagram.
Selecting MORE THAN 1 source node will yield all documents that overlap once and documents that overlap in more than one group.
Selecting All source nodes will yield only those documents that overlap in all three groups - the very center of the diagram.
To create a Combo network node, perform the following procedure.
From the bottom of the Triage window, click Combo
. The
Combo node panel will display.
In the Name field, type in the name of the new
group that will be formed when the combination is created.
Note: While
the node groups made in Triage will display in the Groups window, along
with other groups you have defined, you will not be able to delete or
alter them with the Groups tools. To
change these groups, use Triage and edit the network.
If you want a different color than the one offered, select a color for your node by clicking the Color button. The Select Color window will display. Select a color from the color swatch display and click OK. The new color will display in the Edit panel.
From the Source Node list, select the nodes you
want to combine in the Triage network. The
combination type list will become active.
Select the type of combination from the list to the right of the Source Node list.
Click OK. The
combination node will be created and displayed in the Triage network and
the Combination node panel will close.
To create a Slice network node, perform the following procedure.
From the bottom of the Triage window, click
Slice . The
Slice node panel will display.
In the Name field, type in the name of the
new group that will be formed when the combination is created.
Note: While
the node groups made in Triage will display in the Groups window, along
with other groups you have defined, you will not be able to delete or
alter them with the Groups tools. To
change these groups, use Triage and edit the network.
If you want a different color than the one offered, select a color for your node by clicking the Color button. The Select Color window will display. Select a color from the color swatch display and click OK. The new color will display in the Edit panel.
From the Source Node list, select the node
you want to slice in the Triage network.
The Results for the node will display in the histogram to the right.
The default
selection is Keep the Strongest Documents.
If you want to change the Keep setting, use the pull-down menu to select either Keep the Strongest Documents or Keep the Weakest Documents.
Move the Results histogram slider to select
the 'slice' of documents you want to retain as part of that network node.
The Quantity
of documents will change as you move the slider. Note
the Quality vs. Quantity axes. Typically
the higher the quantity of documents, the lower the quality.
Click OK. The
Slice node will be created and displayed in the Triage network and the
Slice node panel will close.
To work with a Triage network element, place your cursor over an element and right-click.
The Triage network drop-down menu will display. The drop-down menu options are as follows.
