Major Terms

To get an idea of which terms IN-SPIRE uses for clustering, examine the Major Terms list. Major Terms apply to the entire data set (not just to selected documents, for example).

Accessing the Major Terms list

  From the Windows menu, choose Major Terms.

Using the Major Terms list

To sort terms alphabetically

  • To sort items in ascending order, click on the column header.
    [Indicated by 1+ following the column title.]
  • To sort in descending order, click on the column header again. [Indicated by 1- following the column title.]
  • To stop sorting, ALT-click on the column header.

To construct a query using words in the Major Terms list

  1. Click on a word to select it. Use SHIFT-click to select a group of contiguous words, or CTRL-click to select non-contiguous words.
  2. Click Add Words. The words are copied to the text area below the word listbox.
  3. Select the words in the text area and press CTRL-C to copy them to the Clipboard.
  4. Open the Queries Tool.
  5. Click in the Query Text box. Paste the words into the Query Text box using CTRL-V.

To add additional words to those previously selected

  1. Click on the words to select them, as before.
  2. Click the Add Words button. They will appear in the text area below the terms list, with those previously selected.

To erase all the words in the text area
Click the Clear button to erase all the words in the text area below the word list. Delete one or more words by highlighting them and pressing the Delete key on your keyboard, as usual.

To delete terms from the Major Terms list and recalculate the data set

  1. In the major terms list, select a terms in the list by clicking on it.
  2. Click the Outlier Terms button. Terms appear in the Outlier Terms box to the right of the Outlier panel in the Galaxy window.
  3. When all the major terms you wish to exclude are visible in the Outlier Terms box, click Recalculate. The data set is reprocessed, leaving out the outlier terms as major terms in the calculation.

To see helpful information about a part of the Major Terms window
Hover the cursor over it. Information will appear in the Help panel at the bottom of the window.
